LECTURE:
English Romanticism and Victorian literature. Lectures introduce the two periods and then they focus mainly on the 19th-century novel from Jane Austen to Thomas Hardy, thus complementing the programme of the seminars.
SEMINAR:
OBJECTIVES
This course consists of two parts: the first one focuses on discussing Romantic poetry; the second attempts to cover the development of the 19th-century novel. The poetic texts and extracts from the novels will be read closely and interpreted with regard to its historical context. The novels will also be introduced by way of students' presentations.

ASSESSMENT
Each student is expected to give an oral presentation of his/her paper, to submit an essay on assigned topic, to participate actively in the class discussion over the texts and to write a test. SSE students are expected to submit a graded essay in addition to the above. Attendance is mandatory.
