The course objective is to give students practice and experience in preparing and making oral presentations and responding to questions and comments from their peers. As well as focusing on language, content and style, the course aims to build student confidence in speaking in front of an audience and participating in debates.
Course components will include analysis of selected speeches, aspects of non-verbal communication affecting public speaking and guidelines to preparing a short presentation. Each student participating in the class will give a 10-15 minute presentation followed by a question and answer session on a topic of his/her own choice.
Students will also take turns in chairing a session, i.e. introducing the speaker and leading the post presentation discussion. Each presentation will be subject to peer review and comment from the audience as well as a formal evaluation by the instructor.
