Annotation
The lecture deals in an overview with the external and internal history of English, with an emphasis on the most important social and cultural-historical aspects of this development, as well as on the transformation of the language system within the framework of linguistic typology. In this context, the Old English (7th-11th centuries) and Middle English (11th-15th centuries) periods are discussed. The purpose of the course is to provide students of medieval studies with an understanding of the basic diachronic context of language development as part of their training in philology and literary history.
