A comparison of the themes, styles, and preoccupations of their major works, complemented by an examination of the similarities of these themes, styles, and preoccupations to those both of their fellow transcendentalists Emerson, Whitman, and Margaret Fuller, and of later American romancers Henry James, Scott Fitzgerald, John Steinbeck, and Thomas Pynchon.
