OBJECTIVES

This seminar will examine the status of avant-garde writing in the United States, and its impact in the UK and elsewhere in the English-speaking world, from the 1940s until the present. The primary focus of the seminar sessions will be a survey of the work of William Burroughs in print, film and audio. Students will be invited to prepare presentations on related topics. Particular attention will be paid to collaborative works, e.g. between Burroughs and Gysin, Ginsberg and Kronos Quartet, Larry Rivers and Frank O´Hara, the Wooster Group ... The scope of the seminar will thus include visual arts, performance, cinema.

ASSESSMENT

All students seeking credit will be required to submit a research paper of 2,500 words.
