Media & Cultural Theory is a core ("basic") seminar within the InterCultural Studies Programme, taught by Louis Armand and Clare Wallace. The objective of the course is to introduce students to advanced theories of media and "culture" from Thorstein Weblen's Theory of the Leisure Class, to Marshall McLuhan's "typographic man," the cybernetics of Gregory Bateson, the "situationism" of Guy Debord, and to the contemporary writings of theorists like Jean-Francois Lyotard, Paul Virilio and Jean Baudrillard.

ASSESSMENT 2500 word advanced research paper, written according to MLA style, due before 30 April (no extensions); full attendance and participation in seminars; oral presentation.

A reading list and course reader will be advertised prior to the commencement of the course. All students are required to fully familiarise themselves with course materials prior to each seminar.
