OBJECTIVES

The course will concentrate on the development and character of the anglophone novel written by Indian authors.

Through close reading a number of questions will be addressed concerning the specificities of different periods as to style and themes. Special attention will be paid to the examination of the texts with respect to related cultural phenomena, and a set of issues referring to Indian history and society as they appear in the texts will be discussed.

The core reading will be completed by a selection of critical texts.

Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni: The Mistress of Spices (1997)

Arundhati Roy: The God of Small Things (1997)

Neelum Saran Gour: The Sikandar Chowk Park (2005)

ASSESSMENT

Regular attendance and active participation in class discussions (based on the assigned reading) are strictly required. Apart from that students are expected to present a class communication of twenty minutes and submit an essay.
