The seminar is designed to bring into focus the linguistic aspect of the study of English medieval literature with an aim to demonstrate, through practical analysis, that the linguistic and the critical aspect of literary study taken as complementary, in a unifying philological approach, significantly help understand and enjoy medieval literary texts.

Discussions over both primary and secondary texts will attempt to show how a knowledge of the English language of the medieval period helps the reader understand the nature and type of literature written at the time. Themes will include "Editors, texts, readers", "Words: meaning and register", "Levels of Discourse", "Syntax", "Themes", "Parody", "Irony", "Redundancy", "Hyperbole and litotes".
