The objective is to provide an overview of the scope, development and the present-day state of English phraseology and its two main approaches, traditional phraseology and distributional phraseology. The new concept of and research on phraseology bridge the two fundamental aspects of language, grammar and lexis, and lead to the reassessment of the grammar-focused views of language and its functioning.
The seminar will deal with the traditional phraseological (word- and sentence-like) units and the corpus-driven investigation of co-occurrence phenomena (continuous and discontinuous sequences) in text, combining theoretical description with practical exercises.
