The Israeli Holocaust and conflict researcher Dan Bar-On, among many others, argues that in contrast to the dominating Zionist identity, several different “Others” have emerged, divided between external Others (e. g. Arabs) and internal Others (Diaspora Jews, Holocaust survivors, Orthodox, and “Oriental” Mizrahi Jews), in modern Israeli society. By exploring the term “Otherness” in the sense of Alterity, the course will focus on creating the above listed group-based identities and their alteration over time in interaction with the majority society. The phenomenon of
“intersectionality” resulting from multiply othering will be analyzed in the Israeli communal split context.
Representations of "the Others" in Israeli film and literature will be discussed.
The course is accompanied by a screening of commented excerpts of contemporary Israeli cinematography.
