Syllabus

Part of the lectures will also be a space for discussion with students about the issues presented. Individual topics will be specified according to the students' interests. Thematic areas:

1. The Second Republic, the establishment of the protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia - the end of Czechoslovak democracy and the onset of brown totality

2. Culture during the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia (literature, theatre, music, film)

3. Immediate reflection of the Second World War and the occupation in literature and film

4. The year 1948 and the onset of red totality, the 1950s in Czech culture, socialist realism

5. Expo 58 – "Brussels style"

6. The Golden Sixties, a breath of democracy in Czech culture

7. Normalization of Czech society, impacts on Czech culture

8. "Thaw" in the eighties, velvet revolution in 1989

9. Problems of Czech culture at the turn of the millennium

10. Problems and successes of today's Czech culture.

Annotation:

The course focuses on literary and cultural development in Czechoslovakia in the second half of the 20th century, i.e. from 1939 to the turn of the 1970s and 1980s. The key moments of the literary and cultural life of the given period will be confronted and analyzed not only on the basis of relevant texts of primary literature, but also in connection with visual and dramatic arts, but changes in political and social life will also be taken into account.
