The course is focused on the history of Rome, with particular attention to the period of late antiquity. The course aims to analyze the transformation of the Roman Empire and its provinces during that timeframe, the changes that occur in the political, religious and administrative field, and the consequences in the social sphere.
The choice raises up from the desire to analyze the causes that led to the disintegration of the empire, the reasons that led to the reversal of the ideals that had characterized the previous era. Moreover, it is expected to analyze critically the circumstances that become peculiarities in late antiquity, in order to make a comparison with the historical breakup and the problems related to our days.
For this reason, the course includes the analysis of late-ancient literary sources (in prose and poetry, translated into English) and critical analysis of historiographical texts.
