Solidarity! Scream! Explosion! Apocalypse! The era, literature and art of German Expressionism
The after-effects of expressionist impulses and patterns can be traced right through to contemporary literature, art and music. Whether this is due to the Expressionists' attitude to life, the striking themes and depictions of the problems and (anti-)utopias of modern society or the avant-garde work with form and language: quite a few works of German-language Expressionism belong to the canon of modern 20th century culture. The seminar provides an overview of the foundations of Expressionism in literature, film and art. At the same time, various approaches to analysing and interpreting literary texts will be practised. We will read, discuss, watch and listen together or against each other - and perhaps even write a short expressionist text.
