COURSE SUMMARY This course serves as a general introduction to the history, archaeology, language, culture, religion, and art of Ancient Egypt (esp. for Erasmus students). It is specifically tailored to students who are fascinated by all things Egyptian but have no prior knowledge of Ancient Egypt. Each 90-minute session will combine a lecture and a seminar. In addition to the four dedicated lectures on Middle Egyptian, students will work with hieroglyphs from the very beginning to build up their knowledge of the language. Study at home will be required, as well as several short Middle Egyptian language tests. By the end of this course students should acquire a general overview of the many facets of Ancient Egyptian society and, inter alia, be able to read simple Middle Egyptian texts, appreciate the symbolism of Ancient Egyptian artifacts, have a knowledge of key historical events, understand burial customs, or be familiar with the architecture and deities of Ancient Egypt. MAXIMUM NUMBER OF STUDENTS The course will be limited to 15 students. GRADES AND ASSIGNMENTS Apart from several short Middle Egyptian tests, there will be a final written exam (a combination of multiple choice, translation of an Ancient Egyptian text, blind map, iconography, artifacts, etc.).
