This course aims to improve students’s knowledge of cuneiform script and Sumerian grammar. A special attention will be given to a variety of genres: royal inscriptions, administrative documents and letters. In the classroom sessions, we will also discuss the cultural and historical context of the inscriptions we encounter during the course. At the end of the course the students should be able to read, translate, and interpret Sumerian cuneiform texts independently and put them into their historical and cultural context. Moreover, students should have acquired a fundamental understanding of the written legacy of Sumer.
