Annotation

The course Anthropological fieldwork in the Balkans aims to introduce this region as a focus of the anthropological fieldwork of the British social and American cultural anthropology. This specific scholar tradition will be presented and contrasted with local scholar traditions like ethnology or folkloristics.

The historic, cultural and language diversity of the Balkans will be discussed, as well as the most important anthropological fieldworks carried out in the region. Anthropological concepts and interpretations will be introduced of the phenomena like, for example, patriarchy, blood feud, zadruga, collectivization, or post-socialism.
