Czech Underground in the Context of “Real Socialism

Socialism has undoubtedly initiated a number of cultural changes and the collapse of Communism in the Soviet bloc states has without any doubts prompted the interest of social researchers in the study of the so-called transforming societies. The part of it is the analysis of the so-called real socialism, conceived as a specific cultural type. The course aims to help students understand historical, social, cultural and political circumstances that formed a parallel culture in Czechoslovakia before 1989. During the course mainly the techniques of visual anthropology and audio-visual ethnography will be used.

What follows are some of the questions to be discussed: What was the cultural specificity of this epoch, what were the characteristics of socialist everyday life? To what extent and by what logic social changes were initiated that were accompanying the "building" of socialism? What role did the underground culture play during the period of ‘Normalization’, mainly in the spheres of alternative music? How did the unofficial music scene develop? What happened with the unofficial culture and underground society after the “Velvet Revolution”? https://dl1.cuni.cz/course/view.php?id=9504
