Annotation

The notions of ethnicity and nationalism have unexpectedly been among the most frequently used concepts in humanities and social sciences in the last decades. They also played considerable part in connection with ethnicization of social events in many parts of the world (in context with ethnic conflicts, among other things).

In the course of lectures the conception and perception of ethnicity in the past and at present, and changes in this field are analysed. Related terminology, main ethnic theories (ranging from primordialism to modernism) and their representatives (B. Anderson, E. Gellner, F. Barth, T. H. Eriksen and others; from Czech authors M. Hroch in particular) are introduced.
