This seminar will present the treatment of history within three cinematographic genres: documentary film, historical period drama and biographical film (biopic).

Each 90mn class will be divided in two parts; the first will be about general questions (prepared by the lecturer) and the second will be a presentation on a specific topic followed by a group discussion. The two lecturers will take turns: Radek Karkovský will approach technical and specific cinematographic questions whereas Sophie Bouvier will focus on the notion of history in relation to public entertainment, on obvious or discreet censorship, on poetic freedom and the relation between history and ‘stories’.

Each session will be illustrated with several film extracts / illustrations. In the second part, one (or more) student(s) will present a film, a filmmaker or a topic related to their own field of interest (their own country or discipline). They will illustrate their presentation and prepare questions for the ensuing class discussion.

In case of failure during the exam, student has the right to two resit dates.

In case of confinement or quarantine measures, the distance learning will be done via Zoom.
