The course will focus on the philosophical discussion of personal identity (Locke, Hume) and on more contemporary conceptions (Parfit, MacIntyre among others). We will reflect on the question of personal identity in the broader context of the philosophy of 19th- and 20th-century philosophy. Due to this orientation, specific motives will emerge, such as the criticism of personal identity (in structuralism but to a certain degree in existentialism as well) and we will as well tackle the problem of personal identity as related to the membership of a certain group (typically the nation) or gender.
The course is divided into a lecture (on Tuesday 12.30 to 14.05) and two parallel seminars, one of which will focus on reading primary texts in Czech (Wednesday, 15.50-17.30, doc. Čapek and dr. Matějčková)), the other will be held in English (Thursday 12.30-14.05, dr. De Santis). In order to the gain credits, the students are expected to attend lectures and to participate in one of the two seminars offered.
