Karl Jaspers: Communication

Class at Faculty of Arts |
AFS500241

Annotation

The course is focused on reading and translating the chapter entitled “Communication” from the second volume of Jaspers’ Philosophy, where he presents his most detailed and penetrating explanation of various forms of communication. This text is remarkable, among others, for the fact that Jaspers combines the issue of authentic existence or becoming oneself, which is the central theme of the philosophy of existence, with the phenomenon of intersubjective relationships.

Jaspers probably also implicitly argues with Heidegger’s fundamental ontology of Being and Time, where coexistence is an essential feature of “Dasein” but receives attention only in connection with analyses of its everydayness or of its life in the mode of impersonal “man”.
