Modernity can be defined by its tendency towards praxis, action, and work through which we transform ourselves and our world. This transition from contemplation as the most valued type of (philosophical) life to praxis can be witnessed in Hegel, Marx, or Nietzsche.
Yet, along with this, soon a specific weariness emerges, and philosophers start to thematize, once again, a specific type of non-willing, of contemplation freed from striving, of a priority of being over doing. In the course, we will follow this path starting from Hegel who in many ways coined the classical concept of work, in order to move towards thinkers who emphasize a form on non-willing as Weil, Cioran, or Agamben.
