Title of the seminar: Higher-Order-Theories of Consciousness

Language: English

Abstract: The nature of consciousness is a central issue in philosophy of mind. In this seminar, we will consider analytical theories of phenomenal consciousness, i.e. the sort of conscious mental states that have a subjective dimension, f. e. seeing a red rose or listening to music. The focus will rest upon so-called higher-order-theories of phenomenal consciousness which have become widely popular in recent years. We will analyze some of the most influential higher-order theories of consciousness (esp. R. Gennaro, U. Kriegel, D. Rosenthal, R. Van Gulick). We will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of these approaches to phenomenal consciousness.
