The Camera Eye Never Lies? The Avant-garde and Documentary Film Making

Class at Faculty of Arts |
AFV0000172

Annotation

This course will explore the intersection of documentary film making with avant-garde movements and techniques. Students will watch a wide range of Czech, Slovak, and International films (such as: Obrazy starého sveta, Nanook of the North, Grey Gardens) from the beginnings of the documentary film as a genre to present day.

We will discuss issues of documentary filmmaking such as authenticity, genre, and audience, as well as the frequent influence of the avant garde in documentary film. Wherever possible, readings and films will be available in Czech (or with Czech subtitles), but this course also requires a moderate ability to read and write in English.

Each class will focus on discussion of readings and screened films, with a brief introductory lecture for each lesson on the topics of the day.
