The course will map the history of Christianity from the downfall of the Western Roman Empire until the 15th century, in the frame of the political, social, and cultural history of the Middle Ages.
Through an interdisciplinary approach, we will study the history and development of the Church as an institution (papacy, councils, hierarchy, monastic orders, etc.), the milestones of the christian thought and of the Western spirituality, and the main cultural institutions of the Middle Ages.
The course will touch upon the following major themes:
History and organization of the Church from the Antiquity to the Middle Ages
The Bible in the Middle Ages
Monastic orders
Intellectual History of the Middle Ages, with a special attention to the University
The relationship between Philosophy and Theology in the Middle Ages
Orthodoxy, Heterodoxy, Heresy
