Working with medieval Manuscripts II

Class at Faculty of Arts |
AGLV00197

Annotation

The seminar directly follows the seminar "Working with Medieval Manuscripts I." Its aim is to provide, through selected medieval copies of an unpublished Medieval Latin literary or paraliterary work, basic methodological approaches to working with medieval manuscripts. The process starts with their discovery in manuscript collections and culminates in the preparation of an exemplary critical edition of selected parts of the work. The texts studied will change from year to year.

In the first stage, using manuscript repertoires, catalogs, and other medievalist reference materials, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the studied work and locate its medieval copies. The next stage will focus on acquiring basic codicological and paleographical knowledge, involving a codicological analysis of individual manuscripts and careful transcription of selected passages from the studied work. In the final working stage, which aims to familiarize students with editorial techniques, the goal will be to collaboratively create an exemplary critical edition from the previously transcribed passages.

The course includes a visit to the manuscript collection of the National Library of the Czech Republic, as well as other manuscript libraries in Prague and beyond.
