Sylabus

The lecture series “Thinking East Central Europe” is offered by the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University in Prague in cooperation with the Elite Graduate Program in East European Studies at LMU Munich. It forms part of a planned Double Degree programme between the two institutions. Students from both universities will be able to gain insights into the modern social and cultural history not only of the Bohemian Lands and discuss themes central to the formation of identity in this part of Europe in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The first lectures introduce students to the multi-ethnic environment of the late Habsburg Empire and the gradual development of national and political communities heading towards modern statehood. The themes of ethnicity and modern nationalism underpin the lectures on the interwar period and the first decade after the Second World War. The following papers deal with the character, legitimacy and crises of state socialism. The cycle is concluded by two lectures on the emergence and role of older history and literature in relation to modern identity formation in the Bohemian Lands and Hungary.

Die Geburt der Paleobohemistik im 19./20. Jahrhundert

Anotace

Přednáškovou řadu "Ostmitteleuropa denken", tj. "Myslet středovýchodní Evropu" nabízí FF UK ve spolupráci s Institutem východoevropských studí mnichovské LMU. Studenti obou univerzit budou mít příležitost nahlédnout do novodobé sociální a kulturní historie nejen českých zemí a diskutovat řadu témat podstatných z hlediska utváření identity v této části Evropy v 19. a 20. století.

První přednášky posluchače zavedou do multietnického prostředí pozdní Habsburské monarchie, v níž se postupně utváří národní a politická společenství směřující k vlastní moderní státnosti. Téma etnicity a moderního nacionalismu bude pak tvořit základní osu přednášek věnovaných meziválečnému období a první dekádě po druhé světové válce.

Navazovat budou přednášky zabývající se především povahou, legitimitou a krizí státního socialismu. Cyklus pak uzavřou dvě přednášky poukazující na zrod a roli oborů zabývajících se staršími dějinami či literaturou, ve vztahu k utváření moderní identity v českých zemích a Uhrách/Maďarsku.

Přednášet budou nejen historici a historičky z obou univerzit, ale také specialisté v oboru dějin umění či literární vědy. Přednášky budou probíhat výlučně online, a to v německém, resp. anglickém jazyce, k účasti na celém cyklu je potřeba pasivní znalost obou těchto jazyků a schopnost aktivně komunikovat alespoň v jednom z nich.
