During the 19th century, society underwent a far-reaching transformation, which brought with it a number of problems and new challenges. The urban environment was one of the first to find and find solutions.
The course focuses on the change of urban identity under the influence of modernization tendencies and the role of individual actors in this process. The construction of monuments, public buildings, street naming, as well as reflections on national discourse and the issue of loyalty are topics that will be explored on the example of cities that students choose themselves.
The first part of the course will present the legal, political, social and economic background of the functioning of cities in the Czech lands together with a practical demonstration of various types of sources that students will be able to use in their own research. The second part will be devoted to the presentation of students' work.
