Annotation
Czech Popular Culture and Society in the 20th Century
The focus will be on Czech popular culture, understood as the everyday culture of the broad classes, and the connection of its form with the values and beliefs shared by Czech society and the power transformations it underwent. Emphasis will be placed on its longevity, regardless of the prevailing regimes. The predominantly seminar-led course will offer an overview of basic concepts useful for the historical study of popular culture, along with an overview of basic developmental changes, and will offer individual topics treated in the literature or awaiting treatment. It will be an open seminar exploring the theoretical and practical possibilities of researching the role of popular culture in 20th century Czech and Czechoslovak society. It will focus on lived culture and cultural practices as well as cultural texts and their creative use in everyday life. The course participants should become familiar with cultural studies approaches, reflect on the possibilities of their use in the Central European environment and try to apply them to specific phenomena of Czech popular culture. The specific selection of topics to be studied will be adapted to the interest of the participants.
