Annotation
In the Czech collective memory, the era of normalisation (1968-1989) is mostly seen as a time of stagnation, as a perpetual reproduction of the same reality following the massive cleansing of the early 1970s. The course would like to invite students to look behind this veil and to analyse the society and culture of that time in its diversity.
Despite the political immobility and economic problems, various tendencies, and contradictory attitudes and experiences occured in society and culture, allowing us a better understanding of both the remarkable stability and then the sudden collapse of the regime in the late 1980s. By focussing society, economy and culture, the course also tries to place Czechoslovak normalization era in the European context of the important changes of the "long 1970s."
