The Medieval Church: Western Christianity between Rome and Prague

Class at Faculty of Arts |
AHSV10432

Annotation

The course serves as an introduction to the history of Western Christianity in the High and Late Middle Ages (from the East–West Schism to the Reformation) with a particular focus on the development in the Czech lands. It will explore the changes in the organization and religious praxis of the medieval Latin church as well as their impact on the society in the Kingdom of Bohemia. Thus, it will not only present an overview of the history of the medieval church in the West but also provide an insight into Czech church history in its European context. Short excerpts of primary sources will be read during the classes; some knowledge of Latin is not required, but welcome.
