Attention: The first meeting of the seminar is on 28th February 2013!
The rule of Adolf Hitler was the most violent regime in European history. After 12 years of rule its casualties counted millions. In the last decades research has differentiated moving away from its focus on how National Socialism ruled Germany to how it managed to win over broad strata of Germans with the alleged creation of a (however exclusive) "Volksgemeinschaft", how it fostered its rule through mass events and legitimized mass murder in occupied Central and Eastern Europe.
The central questions will focus on the conditions of the rise of National Socialism, how Hitler and his people managed to gain and keep the support of a significant part of the German population, how they ruled and how it became possible that they committed such unprecedented crimes.
