Anotace
Language is written in place where it interacts with other discursive modalities, such as environment, colours, or other visual codes. As Jaworski and Thurlow (2010) put it, semiotic landscape is to mean, in the most general sense, any (public) space with visible inscription made through deliberate human intervention and meaning making. In this lecture, we will focus on the Balkan area, in particular Bulgaria and the successor states of former
Yugoslavia. We will analyse data from these countries, while cities and rural areas will be of particular interest.
Moreover, we will discuss how “Balkan” landscapes are created in a semiotic sense.
