Phonology

Class at Faculty of Arts |
ALINV609B

Syllabus

This course introduces the principles of modern phonological theory, with an emphasis on “classical” generative phonology. Topics to be covered include distinctive features; phonemes and allophones; morphologically conditioned alternations; ordered rules and surface constraints; autosegmental (nonlinear) phonology; syllable structure; and accent and stress.

We will also discuss the role of phonetics in phonological analysis, as well as the interaction (“interface”) of morphology and syntax with phonology, and alternative theoretical approaches such as Government Phonology.
