Syllabus

Sylabus kurzu o Animation in the context of fine-arts and entertainment industry. Putting the current situation to the historical and geographical frame. Outline of production pipeline issues. Differences in the pipelines based on the type of production. Types and techniques of animation. o Mystical vs. utilitarian creative impulse. Development and design of characters in the context of production. Concept-art and his place in the production. Digital paint procedures and methods. o From the idea draft to screenplay, through the storyboard, to animatic. Possibilities of previsualization. Intersections of animation and live-action. o Basic animation principles (timing and spacing). 2D vs. 3D. Brief introduction to 12 principles of animation and their historical context. Classic 2D animation procedures. o Keyframed animation. Basic introduction to the principles of digital cutout. Sprite-sheet. FK vs. IK. Curve editor. o The current theory of 3D animation - hyper puppet, mimesis and uncanny valley. Basic principles and tools for 3D animation. Standard workflow of 3D character animation - design, modeling, texturing, rigging, animation, simulation, shaders, rendering. o Basic introduction to 3D software solutions and 3D animation tools. o Animation of 3D character. Issues of rigging and work with rig, procedural rig, Human IK. o Prospects of 3D animation. Theorical and practical differences between movie and game animation. VFX animation. Mocap methods and procedures. AI and physic simulations in animation. o Future of animation tools and animation in general. VR and AR. Future of concept-art and tools for the previsualization.

Annotation

This course will introduce students to the basic terminology, principles and workflows in production of 2D and 3D animated works. We will pay the attention to the overall production process and individual production stages from the first idea draft to the final realization.

The course will introduce you to the basic animation principles. We will lay emphasis on understanding the nature and character of this type of creative work.

Course will be also focused on the software solutions and requirements of end users, i.e. animator, author, artist, etc. During the course, students will try to produ
