Annotation

Videographic criticism is a growing field in academia between the digital humanities sphere and artistic research.

This approach attempts to grasp the contemporary audiovisual sphere through audiovisual material (desktop documentary, supercut compilation, or performative video). An area that remains uncovered by the videographic approach is the technological and material level of digital culture. As if the content of films, serials, TikToks, or youtube videos still wins over form.

But in this seminar, videographic criticism and practice tools will be combined with a theoretical foundation from media archaeology; hence we will be able to turn our perspective toward artifacts in their technological-material form. We will go beyond learned metaphors to look at the processes and networks in which media artifacts are situated.

The seminar aims to offer knowledge of concepts from the media archaeological approach and teach the essential tools of videographic criticism. The combination of the theoretical and the practical will force us to use and work with concepts in a different way than would be the case with a written text.
