11) Presentation of projects Students will be given data or they will choose data according to their thesis. Processing methods will be chosen in advance and students will demonstrate them in their projects.
The course will introduce students to the basics of applied informatics in archaeology. The main task of the students is to master the theoretical procedures of archaeological data processing and to apply these skills practically. Students will understand the principles of working with data in the R and QGIS environment. The teaching will be complemented by practical introduction to the possibilities of application of 3D digital methods in archaeology and introduction of the Archaeological Information System of the Czech Republic as the basic digital infrastructure of Czech archaeology. The prerequisite for earning credit is active participation in the seminars and successful completion of the seminar project, which will be presented during the last class.
The course consists of a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical teaching focuses mainly on the clarification of the principles that apply to the collection and processing of archaeological data. Practical exercises are focused on solving selected problems arising from the assignments of the students' bachelor or seminary theses and on working with basic disciplinary databases and freely available data. Emphasis will be placed on working with MS Excel, Access, especially R and QGIS. Lectures will be given in Czech and English.
