The seminar is intended for both - experts in (Afro)Lusophone Literatures and Cinemas and those who do not yet know this field. The body of the chosen works is translated into English or with English subtitles so knowledge of Portuguese is not required.
The main goal of this subject is to reflect the expression of the Afro-Lusophone identity that is present in literary works written by Afro-Lusophone writers and film production linked to those texts (or created independently). Using examples of literary and film works from Brazil, Angola, Portugal, and Mozambique, we will examine how the Afro-Lusophone cultural themes present in the source texts can be also expressed and reflected through the medium of film and its specific language.
During the lessons, we will provide only excerpts of full-length movies and literary works so that they could become the source material for critical analyses. (Even though students are very welcome to get familiar with the complete artworks outside of the timeframe of our classes).
