Syllabus

1. Analysis on the level of the stress group: identifying stress groups; stress placement; types of stress groups.

2. Analysis on the level of the intonation phrase: identifying intonation phrases in read and spontaneous speech productions; factors of IP segmenting in the perception; types of pauses; speech rate.

3. Using sound prominence in the structure of connected speech: sentence prominences from the viewpoint of position and function.

4. Intonation as a means of expressing sentence modality: tonal patterns, their basic and marked use.

Annotation

The objective of the seminar is to acquire practical skills concerning the perceptual analysis of prosodic properties of speech. Read and spontaneous speech production of both professional and non-professional speakers are used.

Focus will be placed on the ability to abstract prosodic categories from the variability of the speech signal, and to gradually develop evaluation criteria.
