Syllabus
1. Theatre production as a structured unit, the role of the speech component. Specificity of the language sign in stage elocution, consequences for the use of language resources.
2. Stage elocution; history of the notion and analysis of sound properties; fiction of the so-called naturalness of speech. Demands on speech in stage elocution; intelligibility, stylistic coherence; professional character of elocution; speech rate.
3. Czech in theatre performances. Overview and analysis of sound properties important for Czech in the theatre; the relationship to the standard and other stylistic varieties.
4. The relationship of speech and dramatic text, types of texts, dialogue and monologue; conversational comedy, verse.
5. The relationship of speech and other components of stage performance; speech and motion, speech and music.
6. Students' reports concerning analyses based on selected criteria.
Annotation
The course introduces spoken language in the special communication situation of a theatre performance. The theoretical parts deals with general properties of stage elocution from the viewpoint of the actor and audience, and in different types of theatres.
The course includes practical analyses of samples of contemporary Czech performed on stage.
