Syllabus

1. Specific attributes of the language sound structure; phonology in the description of a language; variation and types in production and perception of speech; segmentation of the sound continuum.

2. The levels of specificity and generality in description of sound units of a language system and text; basic phonological terms and concepts; phonemic system of Czech; inter-language comparison.

3. Phonological opposition and distinctive feature; various approaches of distinctive feature specification and physical reality of speech; phonological processes and their description.

4. Distinctive features of Czech; alternatives according to the research objectives and language qualities; applications in phonological and morphonological description of sound patterns in Czech.5. Phonological description of the syllable; phonotactics and determining syllable boundaries.

Annotation

The objective of the course is to present fundamental theoretical principles and terms which form the basis of the description of the sound structure of a language. Emphasis is put on understanding the systems and on the ability to apply physical descriptors of speech on the phonological level.
