In the series of lectures devoted to great speeches and great speakers, selected aspects of oratory practices from the last few decades will be presented. The analyzes include the speeches of charismatic American politicians, whose speeches have become a permanent part of the canon of oratory (M. Luther King, J. F. Kennedy and others). In this context, the issue of the creative subject in political discourse and the role of speechwriters working for famous public speakers are particularly important. Two important speeches by Lech Wałęsa (1989) and Vaclav Havel (1990) at the US Congress will be presented from the perspective of ideological criticism as an example of democratic discourses in Central Europe. The final pre-election debates in various European countries and in the USA (politicians' behavior, organization of debates, historical moments that determined the candidate's victory or loss) were treated as a separate part of historically important speeches by politicians. Against this background, the final Polish and Czech television debates from the presidential elections in recent years will be presented.
Lectures will be held on the following dates: 8. 10. 2020, 22.10. 2020, 5.11. 2020, 19.11. 2020, 3.12. 2020, 17.12. 2020.
