The course will introduce basic elements of the sociology of social inequality (perspectives, basic concepts and theories). As such, it is appropriate for Erasmus students of various backgrounds as well as for Czech students of sociology especially in their 1st or 2nd year of bachelor´s program.

The course will utilize several film genres to better grasp and understand various aspects of social inequality. For each class, students will have an assignment to study the given topic in the provided text and to watch a video for the purpose of assessing it critically from the viewpoint of selected topic. Classes will be organized as a mix of short lecture, student's presentation, discussion about the text and video. As a result, students should get rather complex and vivid understanding of social inequality together with the ability to apply related concepts and perspectives on the current political and social issues.

Videos will be provided only for educational purposes of the class either in special sessions (in a time agreed on in the first lecture) or via educational platform Moodle.

The course will be held in English.

Course requirements:

Participation: Class attendance (at least 70 %), weekly submission of key points and questions for each film seen, used in the class for discussion (deadline is on every Tuesday). A well explained absence exceeding 70 % threshold can be substituted by elaborating a position paper

Presentation: Each participant prepares a short presentation in which a given dimension of social inequality will be explained on the basis of the selected film.

Final paper: presentation-based paper with developed argumentation.
