Anotace

The student conference on Old Norse Literature and Culture will take place on 28. and 29.5.2020 in Munich (Germany). It will focus on "remarkable literary objects" i.e. objects that in spite of their inanimateness, strange qualities or even non-existence play important or crucial role in one or more works of medieval Scandinavian literature. Magic weapons, tamed vultures and other animals, mystic aurochs' horns or remarkable landscape markers fall into the scope of the course, as well as down-to-earth everyday tools with a prominent role in narrative. The basic task of the conference is to enlighten the function of similar objects in literary, historiographical and religious texts of the Scandinavian Middle Ages.

The course allows only active participation (i.e. delivering a paper at the conference), thus some preliminary knowledge of Old Norse literature is requiered. In case of earnest interest in the subject please contact the supervisor of the course before enrolling.
