Annotation
The course provides an insight into the Hussite Wars from a European perspective. It focuses on the crusade expeditions to Bohemia, their motivation, organisation and progress. The attention centres on specifically crusading aspects of the fight against heretics, such as the activity of papal legates, the ideology of holy war and indulgence campaigns. Chronologically speaking, the course encompasses both the crusades in the 1420s and early 1430s under the Pope Martin V and those in the 1460s under Paul II. It also touches upon the reflection of the crusades in literature and art of the period and contemporary criticism aimed at the crusading wars against the Hussites. An analysis of selected sources (in English translations) forms part of every session. Several excursions are planned as well.
