Quick reading strategies (skimming and scanning)

Reading comprehension practice tests

Reading between lines  

Writing

Paragraph: structure (topic sentence, developing sentences, concluding sentence), types of paragraph

Style: informal, social, formal, academic

Letter/Email: letter of application, cover letter

Essay: structure (introduction, body, conclusion), developing an argument, generalisation vs. specification, cohesion

Graph: describing charts, language of comparison, describing tables, process descriptions  

Vocabulary

Linking words

Nouns, adjectives and verbs used in academic English  

Grammar

Revision and consolidation of grammatical structures (selected according to the needs of the group)

Focus on: articles, passive voice

Annotation

This is a one-semester course, taught 1 x 2 lessons per week.

Objective: This requires the B2 level of English in students. The objective of the course is the development of reading and writing skills in English with a special focus on academic competences. The course may serve as preparation for the RC and W parts of the B2 exam.

Programme: Students will practice reading comprehension of various academic texts (articles, presentation of data) and composition of written samples appropriate for university students (summary, abstract, essay).
