Syllabus

Overview of German language development

Familiarization with recommended literature and dictionaries to individual stages of development

German dialects in the territory of today's German-speaking countries and the Czech Republic

Names of measures and weights

Names of holidays

German geographical names used in the past as equivalents in the Czech Republic

Working with specific texts (texts are chosen to familiarize students with the methodology of translation and understanding of German historical texts

Presentation of professional papers related to the development of German or historical events of the period

Practice writing an official letter aimed at the contact of the user and the archive worker

Annotation

The course is devoted to practical training in reading German written sources from the 16th - 19th century. In connection with this issue will be introduced phenomena related to the linguistic and historical situation in the Czech lands in the 20th century with special attention to aspects of German during the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia.

During the lessons, the students will be acquainted with the translation of German historical texts on examples of concrete texts.

The seminar focuses on the outline of the development of the German language, an overview of German dialects, familiarization with historical measures and weights and historical holidays and dates, as well as on the comparison of Czech and German geographical names in the Czech Republic.

The whole topic is adapted to the professional needs of graduates in the field of archival science and auxiliary historical sciences or history.

Entry to the course is conditional on passing the B2 exam at the Language Center of Charles University.
