German. Architektur zwischen Wien und Prag

Class at Faculty of Arts |
ASZNJ3950

Syllabus

At the beginning of the course the students will suggest topics and walking trails. (The teacher will, of course, help if there are no ideas. The topics relating to the students’ studying programmes are more than welcome.)

In the second week the first face-to-face lesson will take place in the room in Celetná: introduction and organization of the schedule.

During the following weeks the walks on different topics will take place. In case of bad weather, there will be an alternative lesson in the classroom in Celetná.

During the final 2 weeks the group will work on the online guidebook including all the walks and the course will be finished.

Annotation

The course "Architectural Walks through Prague" is aimed at students of level B1/B2 who are interested in history, architecture and urban topography, like to move around and want to try a non-traditional form of learning. The course is led by an Austrian lecturer.

Architecture can be defined as the built environment that humans create for their needs, whether in the form of buildings, facilities, open spaces and landscapes or entire urban structures. Every day we are surrounded by architecture that can control our spatial behaviour, correspond to our aesthetic sensibilities or displease them. Where has architecture been successfully implemented and where not? How will Prague change architecturally in the future? To answer these questions and many more, architecture will be experienced and discovered in the form of walks. A visit to CAMP Prague is planned as part of the course, as well as an excursion to Vienna if there is general interest. Here a guided tour could be organised with the Architekturzentrum Wien, participation in the excursion would be voluntary and would not affect the grade.

The course takes the form of guided tours to places of architectural significance. The walks will mostly take place in the wider centre of Prague, always starting at around 16:20 - so that there is enough time to get from the FF UK buildings to the site. (Please allow 90 minutes per walk - the course is therefore not suitable for students who have lectures on Thursdays from 17:30). In case of bad weather, classes will take place in the Celetna (15:50-17:20) or at another covered location.
