Anotace
In 1857 the first recordings of the human voice were made. Now, unless a concerted effort is made, it would be difficult to make it through a day without listening to some sort of recorded message. In fact, because of the preponderance of audio technology less than 10% of blind Americans can read braille now. Clearly, understanding the complexities and nuances of spoken English is as important as ever – if not more.
In this course we will analyze and discuss as many forms of spoken English in as many ways as we can in one semester. We will look at attempts at standardized spoken English (received pronunciation, broadcast English, the Mid-Atlantic accent); different geographic dialects and their connotations (e.g. why do the American politicians George and Jeb Bush use such different accents despite coming from the same womb?); the reception of foreign accents in English; different registers within certain locales.
We will use speeches, audiobooks, interviews, movies, tv shows, and songs to provide examples.
Assignments will be spilt between written analyses and, more importantly, oral dissections of spoken English.
V roce 1857 byly pořízeny první nahrávky lidského hlasu. V současné době, pokud se o to nikdo nesnaží, by bylo obtížné přežít den bez poslechu nějaké nahrané zprávy. Ve skutečnosti kvůli převaze zvukové techniky dnes umí číst Braillovo písmo méně než 10 % nevidomých Američanů. Je zřejmé, že porozumění složitosti a nuancím mluvené angličtiny je stejně důležité jako kdykoli předtím - ne-li důležitější.
V tomto kurzu budeme analyzovat a probírat co nejvíce forem mluvené angličtiny v co největším množství, jak jen to bude v jednom semestru možné. Budeme se zabývat pokusy o standardizaci mluvené angličtiny; různými geografickými dialekty a jejich konotacemi (např. proč američtí politici George a Jeb Bush používají tak odlišný přízvuk, přestože pocházejí ze stejného lůna?); recepcí cizích přízvuků v angličtině; různými registry v rámci určitých lokalit.
Jako příklady použijeme projevy, audioknihy, rozhovory, filmy, televizní pořady a písně.
Úkoly budou rozděleny mezi písemné analýzy a především ústní rozbory mluvené angličtiny.
