The course deals with the beginnings of the Russian movie at the turn of the 19th and 20th century and first impulses of Soviet cinematography in 1920s. It analyzes not only the Russian (Soviet) movie, with strong emphasis on Montage school in 1920s, but also the whole context in which the Russian (Soviet) cinematography developed, for example the role of art as a whole, role of foreign influences, conditions of development, political and propagandist aspects etc.

A part of the course will compose the projection and examples of chosen movies.
